Patti Rishforth has been painting portraits on commission since her high school days through a local shop. Then she began to visit children’s boutiques to offer a faster alternative to the paintings. She did pencil portraits in 45 minute sittings while children watched a DVD cartoon and the mother shopped. But once she tried to do silhouettes and learned she could offer that art form too – those took over because they only take 5 minutes to complete. So now, she still offers the pencil portraits but does those in her home studio so she can see more people through the day of a typical event. At events, she can take photos of the child across from her to be used for pencil portraits. Or, you can send her photographs by email to Patti@HeartPaperScissors.com. Send as many as you like. As long as you like the expression and she can see details, the photos will work fine. (She’ll let you know if the photos will or won’t work.) Take a look at the samples in this listing. Don’t worry about backgrounds or the usual things you might for a photography session. This is all about capturing the expression you like most.

Patti prefers head on shots with the child looking directly into the camera. She can do soft smiles or big toothy grins – but she personally thinks soft smiles look the best with this soft medium. (But if a parent wants to capture the great big smile – please don’t hesitate to send what you envision.)

These are meant to be stress free. If they smiled perfectly but were not in the shirt you like – Patti can add a collar if you’d like to send a picture of a specific shirt. And don’t worry about bug bites or scratches – she’ll ignore those. On the other hand, if there is a distinguishing mark that should be included and might be viewed as a temporary blemish, make sure you mention it and she’ll include it but in a subtle way (the portrait will be about their expression – not about a scar or mark etc.)

Feel free to ask her any questions or opinions. She just loves portraying people in her art and her main goal is to make sure your child’s unique look and smile is captured!
